Navigating the Water. Alone.

Kanya is 17 and lives in a private orphanage in a rural province, about 7 hours outside Phnom Penh. She is in 5th grade (7 years behind) and tells IOFA intern Susan Rosas that she plans to stay in the orphanage until she finishes medical school.

Kanya is unaware that the orphanage director has to make her leave when she turns 18. It is an incredibly difficult decision. The director reports that the last three youth to leave the orphanage fell victim to labor trafficking, forced marriage, and gang enrollment within months of leaving care. Unfortunately, the orphanage has no resources to help them. Kanya has no living family members, and states that she is afraid to move because of sex traffickers working in the area.

We invite you to help IOFA provide Kanya with the tools and support needed to keep her safe and guide her through this critical and often dangerous transition.
